FORT WALTON BEACH — A search for a man missing in the Santa Rosa Sound has been suspended after hours of attempting to locate him.

Officers with the Fort Walton Beach Police Department were called to Fort Walton Beach Landing on Brooks Street in reference to someone yelling for help while in the water, according to the police press release.

The man's identity has not been released.

According to the release, the man was attempting to swim out to a boat when he started to struggle in the water and called for help. A bystander tried to get the man out of the water, but was unsuccessful.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the U.S. Coast Guard were alerted and responded to the area. After several hours of searching, the man was not located. Early Tuesday morning the U.S. Coast Guard temporarily suspended search operations.
