SEAGROVE — The State Fire Marshal‘s Office is investigating a suspicious fire at a 1,200 square-foot San Juan Street home Monday night.
The two-story home at 198 San Juan St. was heavily involved when crews arrived at 8:55 p.m., according to South Walton Fire District spokesman Sammy Sanchez.
He said investigators suspect arson was the cause of the fire that began at the backside of the home.
He could not say for certain what was used to start the fire.
"It‘s still under investigation and there‘s too many details we‘re still trying to figure out," Sanchez said.
There have not been any other confirmed arson cases in the area.
The fire caused around $50,000 in damages, but was contained to the first floor of the home. The homeowners were not present at the time and are believed to use the structure as a vacation home.
Sanchez added the Walton County Sheriff‘s Office also was notified. He said the home appeared to have been burglarized before the fire began.
