LETTER: Race relations

As a person who is both the Okaloosa County Democratic state committeeman and a courier for a major company, I have unique view of race relations in our area. While delivering packages to thousands of people, I have developed bonds with many of them. It’s sad how often words putting down the black race have come out of the mouths of people whom I had mistaken as friends. Since we’re both white, they must feel that I share their viewpoint.
Just because we elected a black president does not mean that racism is over, as many suggest.
Young black males are immediately seen as suspects and are told they must act a different way than white youths. The judicial system needs a complete overhaul when the vast majority of drug users are white, but blacks are approximately four times more likely to be jailed for the same crime.
It frightens me what has been happening since a black president was elected. Gun purchases have nearly doubled. In my opinion, this isn’t because of a fear of government; it’s a fear driven by news stories that the white population will soon become a minority. President Obama being elected twice is what put them over the edge.
If you aren’t one of these racists, but honestly believe that we are all treated equally, ask one of your black friends or co-workers what he or she has had to go through because of racism. Then form a well-informed opinion.
