I would like to respond to the June 11 letter, “OK, I’m a bigot.” I have a B.A. and an M.A. in anthropology. I have read numerous articles by accredited researchers in the medical, biological and anthropological fields on the topic of homosexuality. I will summarize my findings:
Nine to 11 percent of Americans classify themselves as homosexual, depending on which survey you review, not 2 percent.
Roughly 10 percent of animal populations are homosexual, including numerous bird species. It is believed to be a natural population-control measure, considering the incidence of homosexuality will increase when overcrowding occurs. I don’t believe animals “choose” homosexuality.
Furthermore, medical research has found there are physical differences between the brains of gay and straight men. Certain structures in the gay man’s brain more closely resemble those of straight females. Physical changes are absolutely the result of a person’s genetic foundation. There has been quite a bit of research on genetic influences of many types, and homosexuality tends to run in families, like other genetic traits.
Go to any research library at any institution of higher learning to validate the above points.
Please feel free to be uncomfortable with homosexuality. But I do believe it is God’s place to sit in judgment. Frankly, my belief that it is not my place to judge has freed me up to love and enjoy a wide range of friends.
The writer of “OK, I’m a bigot” is free to not approve of homosexuality. I just wish he wouldn’t use assertions with no factual basis to support his position.
