CRESTVIEW – A man lost two of his three methadone tablets after they dissolved in a pool of soft drink, but the remaining pill was enough to land him in jail for possession.

On April 25 a Crestview Police officer was watching a known drug-trafficking area on Brett Street and Walnut Avenue when he spotted a pickup truck appear on the scene. The passenger got out, went into a house, then came back out a couple of minutes later and conducted an exchange with the truck driver. The truck then left.

The officer spotted the truck approaching the intersection of Walnut and South Ferdon Boulevard, and noticed the driver wasn’t wearing his seatbelt, so he pulled him over. He noticed the driver placing something behind the passenger seat.

The driver, identified as 32-year-old Jason Daniel Smith of Crestview, appeared to be nervous, the officer wrote in the arrest report. His bottom lip was shaking and his speech was slurred. The officer asked if there was anything in the truck he needed to be aware of and Smith replied, “Methadone.” He added he threw it behind the seat.

The officer found one tablet on the floorboard, but couldn’t collect the other two because they were dissolving in a puddle of spilled Mountain Dew on the floorboard.

Smith was charged with possession of a controlled substance without a prescription and has a June 11 court date.
