Karen Clifford was just 34 when she was diagnosed with bladder cancer.

Nine years later, the Fort Walton Beach woman learned there was a way she could give back to the organization that helps others with her diagnosis.

On the first Saturday in May each year, the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network organizes walks to raise awareness as well as money for research.
Last year, Clifford held her first BCAN walk in Fort Walton Beach, raising more than $1,500.

On May 4, 2013, she did it again, raising more than $2,500. Six of those who participated were survivors of bladder cancer.

“What means the most to me is having the opportunity to meet other bladder cancer survivors,” Clifford said. “Some of them have remarkable stories to share.”

Clifford exceeded her fundraising goals both years and is grateful that she had a chance to bring attention to BCAN.

Neighbor and close friend, Joyce Nunnery, was so impressed with Clifford’s contributions she asked for her to be recognized.

“She has used her experience as the impetus for bringing knowledge of bladder cancer before our community,” Nunnery said. “Karen could have been content to be grateful for her successful fight, but she chose to reach out to others in the spirit of compassion and service.

Also nominated: Mental health professionals Lyle Sandquist, Linda Buckland, Valerie Peterson, Michael Sturdivant, Randy Booke, Carmen Dossett and Jack Keller.
