CRESTVIEW — A man was listed in critical condition Tuesday afternoon after a vehicle hit a gas pump while he was gassing up his car at a Tom Thumb station, according to police.
Marvin D. Bass, 66, of Crestview, was about to pump gas into a white Ford pickup about 8 a.m. when an Isuzu Rodeo driven by Janet Coward, 33, of Crestview, veered off South Ferdon Boulevard and hit the pump, according to a news release from the Crestview Police Department.
Bass was pinned between the pump and the pickup before he was knocked to the ground and thrown under the back of the vehicle, according to the news release. The pump then burst into flames.
Bystanders pulled Bass to safety.
Bass was in critical condition at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola on Tuesday afternoon.
Coward was taken to North Okaloosa Medical Center with minor injuries, said Lt. Andrew Schneider, public information officer for the Police Department.
Crestview firefighters extinguished the blaze.
About $75,000 worth of damage was done to the gas station, according to the fire department.
Southbound traffic was at a standstill for nearly an hour while emergency crews worked the scene.
Police were still investigating later Tuesday why Coward‘s vehicle left the road.
