Airmen from Hurlburt Field and other volunteers participated in a walk for sexual assault awareness and distributed information to beach goers at Fort Walton Beach, April 20.
April is the month of sexual assault awareness and members of Team Hurlburt have been working hard to get the word out.
“We have a month dedicated to this so we can really push out the word and really make people go, ‘oh wow, there is an issue with sexual assault,” said Janet Morrison, sexual assault response coordinator for 1st Special Operations Wing. “While we do briefings all year and different events, we want to have one month that’s dedicated so we can show people that, yes, it is still an issue, it isn’t something that just goes away if we don’t talk about it.”
Senior Airmen David Vasquez, an aerospace propulsion technician for the 15th Air-craft Maintenance Unit currently going through Airmen Leadership School, is one of many volunteers that came out to show their support.
“We’re here in support of sexual assault awareness,” said Vasquez, “We met up at the Hampton Inn and walked about a mile [to make people aware of sexual assault].”
Airmen have their reasons for participating in the walk, but for Vasquez, he just wants people to be aware.
“I have a mother and a couple of sisters and of course I wouldn’t want anything to happen to them” said Vasquez. “Especially during this month, a lot of spring breakers come into this area to party and I just want to make them aware of what could happen and overall, just prevent anything that can happen.”
