Make it five members of Northwest Florida State College’s NJCAA national finalist basketball team to sign with a Division I college.
On Monday, Arthur Edwards, a 6-foot-7 forward from Temple Hills, Md., announced his intention to continue his basketball ca-reer at the University of New Mexico.
According to Northwest Florida State head coach Steve Forbes, Edwards has the chance to become a to-flight college basketball player.
“First of all, New Mexico is getting an outstanding young man, on and off the court," said Northwest Florida State head coach Steve Forbes. “And I think they are getting a player whose best days are ahead of him. Arthur is a guy that showed flashes of how good he could be while he was here, and with three years to develop, I think he will be a very good college basketball player."
The pledge to New Mexico from Edwards gives the 2012-13 version of the Raiders five Division-I signees, as four other team-mates have already signed to play at the next level. All-America point guard Chris Jones is headed to Louisville to play for the defending national champions under head coach Rick Pitino; freshman forward Elgin Cook has committed to the University of Ore-gon; guard Lamin Fulton has signed with Albany University; and sophomore center Marvin Williams is headed to play at the University of Louisiana-Monroe.
"I think we have good players here, players who know how to win," said Forbes. "We've really tried to sell these guys on coming here and being part of a winning team, and when it's time to move on, college coaches want to coach our kids."
Edwards averaged seven points per game in 2012-13, including 14 in the Raiders’ NJCAA National Tournament-opening win over USC-Salkehatchie.
