FORT WALTON BEACH — A brush fire threatened a communications tower in Fort Walton Beach early Sunday afternoon.
The fire started about noon in an area of thick brush near the intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Robinwood Drive.
It was moving in two directions and spreading fairly quickly due to a light breeze, said Capt. Gary Kruschke with the Fort Walton Beach Fire Department. Flames lapped at the trees as the fire burned through the brush.
Kruschke said the fire started to burn into a communications tower.
“We were able to stop it before it got into that area,” he said.
The fire burned about a 100 foot by 100 foot area, but caused no structural damage. Firefighters cleared the scene by 2 p.m.
Although the exact cause was unknown, Krushke said it appeared some homeless people may have been living in the area and started a fire to keep warm the night before.
Okaloosa Island firefighters assisted at the scene.
