NAVARRE BEACH — Firefighters rushed to a condominium fire Friday night after they battled a blaze at a landfill near Holley earlier in the evening.

The Navarre Beach Fire Department took command of the scene at Summerwind condominium. Midway, Okaloosa Island, Florosa, Holley-Navarre and Escambia County Fire Rescue assisted, according to a Holley-Navarre fire official.

Arriving firefighters reported flames were coming from the 16th floor of the condo about 8 p.m., Holley-Navarre Battalion Chief Howie Rounsaville said. The fire appeared to have been started by an electrical short with a hot tub, he said.

The blaze was out by about 8:30 p.m., Rounsaville said.

About 5 p.m., a fire at the 3 Trade Landfill off River Road also brought out several fire departments.
Firefighters reported a 100-foot by 100-foot fire at the site, Rounsaville said. Earlier that day, trucks had dumped vegetation in the landfill.

Tanker trucks from the Harold Volunteer Fire Department and Hurlburt Field were brought in to help contain the fire. Responding agencies included the Blackwater Forestry Center and Navarre Beach, which assisted Holley-Navarre. Florosa was on standby at the county line.

The landfill fire was contained about 8 p.m. and turned over to forestry units so firefighters could respond to the condo fire.
