As an environmental professional with 20 years of experience, I must speak out in opposition to HB 431.
The Broxson bill allows for oil and/or gas exploration within the Blackwater River State Forest.
The Blackwater River State Forest, as implied, is named for the Blackwater River. The Blackwater River is an Outstanding Florida Water (62-302.700 F.A.C). The river is one of the purest sand-bottom rivers in the nation.
Blackwater River State Park is on the southern boundary of the Blackwater River State Forest. Within the forest itself are several important plant communities that are unique to our area and provide habitat to a wide array of plant and animal species.
The park and the state forest are also known for their historical and archaeological significance. Remnants of sawmills embrace our timber industry’s history.
According to 18-2.018 F.A.C., applications to use trustees-owned uplands require a determination that use of public lands is not contrary to the public interest.
Although it’s being touted as an economic opportunity for this area, allowing oil and gas exploration in these ecologically sensitive and important areas runs the risk of irreversible environmental damage. It is time for the Sunshine State to move toward a long-term, sustainable energy solution that does not include oil and gas exploration and use.
The proposed bill is not in the best interest of the public. Our public lands, lands that have been set aside for us and our children, will be irreversibly impacted by this bill. Say NO to HB 431!
