For those few but vocal critics who care everything for how I look, here’s my new hair.
In case you missed it, several readers have written or called me in recent weeks to not-so-gently suggest that I need a new hairdo and picture. My most recent “fan” told me she hated how my hair was all “globbed” around my face before she thanked me and hung up.
So, I fixed it.
Do you like it?
Most importantly, do you like me more now that I have new hair?
If so, good, I think. If not, no worries.
Because I lied. I’m sorry to disappoint you, but this is not my hair.
I borrowed it from Farrah Fawcett.
I’ve always liked her hair, ever since my brother put that poster of her in a red tank suit up on the wall in his bedroom.
So I thought, why not? If folks are upset about the way I look and it’s distracting them from the content of my column, I can fix this.
Graphic artist Ken Maines lent some time and computer skills to the project and now, thanks to him, I’m able to embrace my new look.

Finally I can get back to writing about what really matters.
It didn’t cost me a penny. I didn’t have to carve out time to go to a salon and get a cut, color and extensions. I can get out of bed in the morning and be ready for work in no time. I’m really pleased.
All that hair will take a little bit of time to get used to, of course. After years of being a brunette, I’ve gone blonde in an afternoon. I went from having one handful of hair to having about six.
But Farrah’s do worked a lot better for me than Christie Brinkley’s. Her hair made me look like a corpse.
Katy Perry’s was too drastic and too black.
I’ve always thought red hair was beautiful, but I’m no Lucille Ball. I know because I tried to be for a few minutes on Friday. If people think my current column photo is dated, they really wouldn’t love me as Lucy.
Now I know it seems like I’m pandering to the squeaky wheels here, instead of the larger number of readers who emailed or called me to tell how much they liked my column and the way I look.
But stepping out of the bad hair closet has been liberating and rewarding, in many ways. I feel richer, and blonder, for the experience.
And I’m still me.
A picture is not worth 1,000 words.
